On 6 November 2017 the General Conference of UNESCO, unanimously elected Dr El Tayeb Mustafa, president of the university, as a president of the Science Commission.

This is the first time that Sudan has been elected for such important post. The mandate of the Presidency is to chair the debate of the UNESCO member states until the approval of a UNESCO overall integrated budget for the coming 4 years as well as the programmes and budget for 2018-2019. The commission will also examine and approved the establishment of 7 UNESCO (Cat 2) centres.

The presidential assisted by 4 vice-presidents from Portugal, Namibia, Uruguay and Bangladesh. Poland will act as Rapporteur. A team of nine professionals staff were assigned to act as Secretariat for the president.

The mandate of the president is two years
